Elegant and Charm

  • Population: 88,000 (2018)
  • Area:  36.3 square miles

Per a Macomb Daily article from July 2018, Romeo Plank was the road to everywhere.  The famous Romeo Plank Road was an extremely important road to the developing township in the past. It was actually called ‘Plank Road’ for many years because it used to be made of nothing but wooden planks. This road was significant because it was the main route that all farmers took. So many people traveled along this road it was turned into a toll road.

In fact, for many years the road was simply made out of wood, it was only paved in the last 50 years.

The early founders of Macomb Township arrived in the early 19th century in search of flat and fertile farmland, like that near the Clinton River. Many of these early settlers were of German descent, and the German influences remain today. The Township of Macomb was officially approved by the Legislative Council on March 7, 1834.

The township was named in honor of General Alexander Macomb, who was a highly decorated veteran of the War of 1812; his successful mercantile family owned most of Macomb County at one time.

Macomb Township was also a large part of the lumber and logging industry of Southeast Michigan in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Logs would be transported south from Wolcott Mill in Ray Township, down the Middle Branch Clinton River to sawmills.

The Story of Aspen Restaurant

Located right on the Hall Road corridor Aspen Restaurant has an amazing history.  Aspen wasn’t built on the location where it currently sits, it was moved from a different location.  In 1994, on Conger Bay Drive in Harrison Township,  a place called Gar Wood’s Bayview Lodge was nested just off the banks of Belvedre Bay.  This location entertained guests with great music, fantastic food, and spectacular family first service.  Whether you got there from land or by water, Gar Woods was the place to be for families, friends and businesses.  In October of 2002, Gar Woods said goodbye to the Belvedre Bay and moved, by truck, to its current location, 20333 Hall Rd., Macomb Twp, MI.  Whether you’re looking for a restaurant, a banquet center, a caterer or somewhere to meet friends for an evening drink, Aspen has every angle covered.
